Best Shopify Theme for a Clothing Brand (and How to Set It Up to Sell)
The theme matters less than how you set it up, but the wrong theme can hold you back. What we use on clothing brands and the setup that actually lifts conversion.
By Ray · Updated
"Which theme should I use?" is one of the first questions clothing brand owners ask us. The honest answer: the theme matters less than how you set it up, but the wrong theme can quietly hold you back. Here is how we choose, and the setup that moves conversion far more than the theme itself.
Free theme or paid theme?
Starting out: a free theme like Dawn is fine. It is fast and well built; most free-theme stores underperform because they were never set up properly, not because of the theme.
Once you have made your first five figures: move to a paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store built for fashion. You get stacked product sections, bundle and upsell blocks, better cart drawers, better product galleries and regular updates. Several of our clothing clients run Release (Time A Tell, Full Circle Caps); Hello Black Child runs Lollipop. On one store, moving from a free theme to a properly set up paid theme took daily conversion from roughly 0.5–1% to 2–3%.
Never use a pirated ("nulled") theme
You will find premium themes sold cheap on Telegram and resale sites. Don't. Pirated themes don't get updates, often break with apps and new Shopify features, and can carry malicious code that sees your customers' checkout journey. In our own tests, stores on legitimate Theme Store themes converted more consistently than stores on third-party or pirated copies. Buy the licence; it is one of the cheapest investments in the business.
The setup that matters more than the theme
Design on mobile first
On the clothing stores we run, 95–98% of traffic is on phones (Time A Tell: 97% over the last 30 days). In the theme editor, switch to the mobile view before you touch anything and stay there.
Announcement bar with a real offer
The most-seen line on the site. Use it for a real offer and its real end date, or a real shipping promise.

A hero that says one thing
One strong image, one line about what's new, one button straight to the product or collection. If you use video, keep the file small; heavy videos slow the first load.
Product photos: 8 to 10 per product
Online shoppers can't touch or try on your clothes, so the photos have to do it:
- Front, then back (people miss back prints if you skip it).
- 2–3 detail shots: print, stitching, fabric, tags, the inside.
- Model and lifestyle photos so people can picture wearing it.
- The size chart as the last image or right under the size selector.
If product cards crop your photos badly, set the product card image ratio to auto in the theme settings.
Price sets so the set is the obvious choice
Sell hoodies and sweatpants separately and as a set, priced so the set clearly saves money. Seeing $90 + $90 next to a $130 set makes the set the easy decision and raises your average order value. (More on this: the High-AOV Playbook.)
Cart drawer, free shipping bar, upsell
Use a cart drawer instead of a cart page. If you are running a multi-item offer, letting items drop into the drawer without it popping open every time makes it easier to keep shopping.
Brand the checkout
Settings → Checkout → Customize, in mobile view: add your logo, colours and fonts. A bare checkout with just your store name looks like a different site.
The finishing details
Favicon, policies in the footer, social links, a contact page, and theme animations off if the store feels slow.
Learn the theme by playing with it
The Shopify editor is drag and drop. The fastest way to learn it is to add every section type to a duplicate of your theme and try every setting. Always work on a duplicate, never the live theme, and save after every change.
Theme checklist
- Legitimate theme from the Shopify Theme Store, paid once you have traction
- Built and checked in mobile view
- Announcement bar with a real offer or shipping promise
- Hero: one image, one line, one button
- 8–10 photos per product, front and back first, size chart
- Sets priced below the separates
- Cart drawer with free shipping bar and an upsell
- Branded checkout, favicon, policies
